1-Day Portrait Painting Workshop Spend a day exploring colour and paint, learning how to bring an oil portrait to life. Through demonstrations and individual guidance, you’ll learn to mix natural skin tones, organise your palette, and apply paint with confidence. We’ll explore how colour, tone, brushwork, and edges work together to create convincing form and character. You’ll work from your own photograph, with the portrait drawn onto your painting surface before the workshop. This allows us to devote the day to painting, giving you time to develop your technique and an approach you can continue using at home. What we’ll cover Mixing colour Learn to judge and mix skin tones, recognise warm and cool colours, and keep light and shadow clear. Building form with paint Work across the portrait, using purposeful brushstrokes and relationships between colours and tones to give the face depth. Developing the painting Refine key areas, control edges, and make decisions about where to add detail and where to keep things simple. Who is it for? Beginners with some drawing experience, intermediate painters, and anyone who wants to feel more confident painting portraits in oils. Practical information The workshop takes place in Oxford, with public transport connections and cafés nearby. Your place includes a full day of tuition, demonstrations, and individual feedback. You’ll take home your painting in progress and practical skills to help you continue developing it. Please bring your chosen photograph and a painting surface with the portrait already drawn out.
