3-Day Portrait Painting Workshop Learn a clear, step-by-step process for painting an oil portrait, from the initial drawing to the finishing touches. Through demonstrations and individual guidance, you’ll learn to draw accurate proportions, organise light and shadow, mix natural skin tones, and build convincing form with paint. We’ll work from photographic reference so you can take the same approach back to your own studio, even without access to a model. The three days Day 1 — Drawing & block-in Establish the proportions, place the features, and lay in the main areas of light and shadow. Day 2 — Building colour & form Mix skin tones and work across the whole portrait, using colour and tone to give the face a sense of depth. Day 3 — Refining the portrait Develop the likeness, soften or sharpen edges, and add finishing touches without overworking the painting. Who is it for? Beginners with some drawing experience, intermediate painters, and anyone returning to portrait painting. Practical information The workshop takes place in Oxford, with public transport connections and cafés nearby. Your place includes three full days of tuition, demonstrations, and individual feedback.
